Despite the cancellation of the annual Mission Santa Ines fireworks show because of the Gap Fire, Vlley residents still enjoyed the Fourth of July last week.

Thousands of residents and visitors lined the streets of Solvang in the late morning on July 4 for the annual Independence Day parade, which attracted more than 50 entries showcasing the theme of "Honoring Our Families."

Walt and Kay Alves were honored as grand marshals for the event, which is coordinated each year by the Solvang Rotary Club.

Rotary officials made sure virtually everyone received recognition with its award announcements, naming everything from "Best Ambulance" to "Best Viking Ship" to "Best Street Sweeper."

Among the other honorees were Reel Cowboys, earning "Sweepstakes," and retired Sgt. Maj. Wes Maroney and Sgt. Chris Ream, who won "Most Patriotic."

Parade watchers wore all fashions of red, white and blue - from hats and matching shirts, to flags in the hair and faces painted in the colors of Old Glory.

In the evening, the fireworks display was cancelled because emergency personnel were stretched too thin as they battled the growing blaze above Goleta.
